The name Walt Disney conjures up many feelings in people: wonder, joy, creativity, imagination. Even though he died decades ago, Walt Disney lives on in such characters as Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Pinocchio, and Bambi. Everyone has received at least one disney gift when they were a child. Disney is embedded into the American culture.
Walt Disney was a visionary and strived to continually perfect the field of animation. He made “Steamboat Willie,â€? the first cartoon made with sound. He was ridiculed for making “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,â€? the first animated full-length feature movie. It cost almost $1.5 million to make during the Unites State ’s Depression era. Walt Disney had the last laugh, though, winning an Academy Award for his efforts and earning even more respect and love from the public.
While he continued to make animated films like “Peter Pan and Cinderella, Walt Disney also branched out into the non-animated kind, one of his first being “ Treasure Island . Soon though, television beckoned.
Walt Disney produced movies and shows including “The Mickey Mouse Club which ran for years and spawned such notable stars as Annette Funicello, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. However, Walt Disney was just getting started! Next on his agenda was “Mary Poppins, which blended live action and animation sequences.
Walt Disney wanted to create a theme park where the public could interact with his beloved characters in person. This place would allow families to experience rides and entertainment in a secure setting. Disneyland was the culmination of this dream and led to the eventual purchase of land in Florida for another theme park called Disneyworld .
Unfortunately, Walt Disney never got to see Disneyworld completed. He died of lung cancer in 1966. In his life, he accumulated forty-eight Academy Awards, several Emmys and numerous honorary degrees. He was also instrumental in the development of the California Institute of the Arts. Walt Disney’s work and dreams live on today, not only through his achievements but also with the child that still lives within all of us. And to think, it all started with a little mouse named Mickey.
